The above article is by Harvard political philosophy professor Michael Sandel. Title: "What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets." It is a lecture he delivered in May 1998 that is referenced in several articles on military conscription. The section of the article on military conscription is pages 109-114. It, though, is also important to read the beginning of the article where he frames what he is discussing, especially the section entitled "Two Objections: Coercion and Corruption." At first, it may seem like this article isn't topical, but give it a few pages, and you'll see the relevance.

Title: "The Economic Costs and the Political Allure of Conscription." This article is written by Panu Poutvaara, prof. of economics at the University of Helsinki in Finland, and Andreas Wagener, currently a prof. of economics at the University of Hanover in Germany and formerly on faculty at the University of Vienna. It is dated 2006, making it more recent.

The Cato Institute is a libertarian think tank that does nonprofit public policy research from this political perspective. Doug Bandow, the author of both articles, was an assistant to President Reagan. These articles are a bit old, but they still have useful points. Just keep in mind the changed historical context when you are reading anything pre-Sept. 11.
