Resolution Announced for Main Session

Here it is...

Resolved: Military conscription is unjust.

This will be the LD topic for the two-week main session. This resolution is on the list for potential topics between Nov.-Dec. 2008 and Sept.-Oct. 2009. We think there is a good chance that this topic will be voted in by coaches; however, the guessing is never perfect. So, we also have chosen this topic because we think it will be a good teaching topic for camp. It raises a lot of classic LD issues for those beginning in debate and allows for more advanced debaters to go in some interesting directions.

Our schedule will require that cases be finished within the first four days of camp so that we can begin critiqued practice debates. This is actually more time than many camps give for case preparation, but it still is a highly tight crunch. It is recommended that students begin reading, researching, and learning about the topic prior to coming to UTNIF. Some more advanced students may choose to work on cases ahead of time, but this is not required. If case writing is something you are trying to improve, you may want to wait to get guidance from your instructors. Nevertheless, everyone can benefit from reading about the topic ahead of time and familiarizing themselves with the key issues.

We are still trying to decide upon the resolution for the extension. That will be posted soon here as a comment to this message.

I'm new to Utnif and it'll be my second year in LD debate by the time school starts but maybe you guys could provide all the possible resolutions for Nov.-Dec 2008 and Sept.-Oct. 2009?

That'd help quite a bit..

This is the resolution that we will do for the extension week:

Resolved: In a democratic society, felons ought to retain the right to vote.

Students staying for the third week will prepare cases and participate in practice rounds on this resolution during that extra time.

So, military conscription will be the topic used from July 11-24. Main session students check out on July 25. On the 25th, extension students will begin work on the topic of felon voting rights.

To answer the request above about upcoming resolutions. The NFL released 10 topics at Nationals that coaches will vote on over the summer. Five of these 10 topics will be selected to be debated based on this vote. These are the potential topics for Nov.-Dec. 2008, Jan.-Feb. 2009, March-April 2009, Nationals 2009, and Sept.-Oct. 2009.

Here is the list up for vote:

R: Military conscription is unjust.

R: On reservations, sovereignty claims by indigenous peoples ought to be prioritized above the plenary power of the United States federal government.

R: In a democratic society, felons
ought to retain the right to vote.

R: A parliamentary form of government is preferable to the United States presidential system.

R: United States law ought not recognize marriage.

R: United States immigration policy ought to prioritize admitting skilled workers over reuniting families.

R: The United States ought to submit to the jurisdiction of an international court designed to prosecute crimes against humanity.

R: Public high schools students in the United States ought not be required to pass standardized exit exams to graduate.

R: The United States ought not issue torture warrants.

R: Vigilantism is justified when the government has failed to enforce the law.

So, five of those topics above will be debated over the next year, starting in November.

The topic for Sept.-Oct. 2008 will be chosen from last year's list. There are 6 possible resolutions remaining that could be selected.

They are:

R: International leaders ought to cancel the debt of highly indebted poor countries.

R: Governments ought to make economic reparations for their country’s historical injustices.

R: It is morally permissible to kill one innocent person to save the lives of more innocent people.

R: In the United States, jury nullification is a legitimate check on government.

R: Successor governments ought to pursue transitional justice through truth and reconciliation commissions rather than through criminal prosecution.

R: Public health concerns justify government violation of pharmaceutical patents.

So, one of those topics will be chosen for us to begin the new school year.

Every year at NFL Nationals (which began on Monday and will continue through Saturday) a wording committee meets to decide on the possible resolutions for the upcoming school year. A final list produced by the committee is released near the end of the tournament, so at some point this weekend, most likely. One of the first places you are likely to see the list posted is at this website: http://victorybriefsdaily.com/

They are pretty quick about posting new information regarding the national debate community.

The topic list will also be posted on the NFL website once it is completed: http://www.nflonline.org/Main/HomePage

The NFL website should also have instructions on how to vote on the resolutions once Nationals is over. The ballot is usually due at the beginning of the school year.

Hope this helps. If you need anything else, feel free to email me at sthomas@mail.hockaday.org.
